Seven-Run Fifth Sends SLU Past ULM, 7-1

HAMMOND, La. – A seven-run fifth inning by Southeastern Louisiana proved to be the difference as the Lions triumphed 7-1 in non-conference softball action over ULM softball on Wednesday, April 21.

ULM (13-24) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when Korie Kreps led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Andie Edwards moved her teammate to second with a sacrifice bunt before Jessica Williams dropped a single through the left side of the infield, allowing Kreps to score from third base.

Southeastern Louisiana (25-16) put the first two batters of the fifth on base before a single to second base by Lindsey Rizzo loaded the bases with one out. Madisen Blackford reached on a fielder's choice and a fielding error in the infield allowed the Lions to knot the game at 1-1.

A second infield error, with Kelci Boldin at the plate, opened the door for both Cameron Goodman and Rizzo to score, moving the lead to 3-1. The Lions added their fourth run of the game on a single to third by Anna Rodenberg. Cameron Beal kept the Southeastern Louisiana offense rolling with a two-RBI single to third, driving in the tandem of Bodin and Rodenberg for the 6-1 advantage. The final run of the inning came when Beal crossed the plate on a double to right field off the bat of Audrey Greely.

Goodman highlighted the lineup for the Lions, finishing 3-for-3 from the plate with a run scored. Beal came through with a team-best two RBIs, going 1-for-3 from the plate. Heather Zumo (15-3) picked up the victory, limiting ULM to one run on five hits while recording five strikeouts in five innings. Two of those five hits allowed went for doubles.

ULM had six hits in the contest, all from different hitters. Williams was responsible for the lone Warhawk RBI, finishing 1-for-3 from the plate. Adrianna Chavarria (1-8) suffered the setback, despite recording five strikeouts, after surrendering five runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings in the circle. Amber Coons and Gianni Hulett followed on the mound, allowing a combined six hits, two runs and one walk.
