ULM Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader Against Georgia State

MONROE, La. – ULM opened its final Sun Belt Conference regular-season series by splitting a pair of 2-1 decisions against Georgia State Saturday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.
 
Jayden Mount posted her ninth and 10th multi-hit games of the season, going a combined 4-for-7 and scoring two runs in the doubleheader.
 
The rubber game of the three-game series is scheduled for Sunday, May 2 at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early since the Senior Day recognition will take place prior to the home finale.
 
Game 1: ULM 2, Georgia State 1
Georgia State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in first game of the doubleheader, scoring an unearned run in the top of the second. Bailee Richardson drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a throwing error as Sophie Mooney reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. With runners at first and third, Gianni Hulett recorded back-to-back strikeouts swinging against Skylar Mosel and Alyssa Brumelow. Kalynn Hicks followed with an RBI double to center field, scoring Richardson. After issuing her second walk of the inning, Hulett induced a groundout to third to leave the bases loaded.
 
The Warhawks got back-to-back singles from Alysia Anderson and Jayden Mount with one out in the bottom of the third, but Sophie Mooney recorded a groundout and strikeout to strand two runners.
 
Hulett retired eight Panther hitters in a row until Hicks singled to center to open the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third with two outs, Georgia State failed to add to its 1-0 lead as Daisy Hess flied out to right field.
 
Mooney set down seven Warhawks in a row until issuing a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth, but the inning ended with Anderson being caught stealing at second base.
 
Mount started ULM's late rally by reaching on an infield hit to shortstop to open the bottom of the sixth. After Korie Kreps walked, Andie Edwards advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. With Rylee Lara at the plate, Mount scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch. After Lara walked, Kennedy Johnson picked up the go-ahead RBI on a groundout off reliever Savannah Freeman, scoring Kreps from third.
 
Hulett went the distance to improve to 5-6 on the season, allowing an unearned run on two hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. She closed out the game by retiring the last eight GSU hitters in a row.
 
Mooney (2-4), who pitched five and one-third innings and allowed two runs, one earned on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts, took the loss.
 
Hicks collected both of GSU hits, finishing 2-for-3 with the RBI double coming in the top of the second.
 
Game 2: Georgia State 2, ULM 1
Georgia State (15-25, 3-15 Sun Belt) got back-to-back singles from Emily Brown and Sydney Stavro to open the game. With two outs, the Panthers took a 1-0 as Brown scored on a wild pitch as Sophia Mooney walked.
 
With runners at second and third and two outs in the top of the second, GSU took a 2-0 lead on Stavro's RBI single through the middle scored Gabby Benson from third. The lead-off batter reached on a throwing error.
 
As in Game 1, Jayden Mount jump-started the ULM offense, reaching on a bunt single to open the bottom of the third inning. Mount stole second, advanced to third on Alysia Anderson's sacrifice bunt and scored on squeeze bunt by Korie Kreps.
 
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Mount reach on an infield single to shortstop, advanced to second base on a ground out and third on a wild pitch. Kreps walked with two outs and stole second. The come-back bid ended as Rylee Lara flied out to deep left.
 
ULM (15-28, 5-13) had its share of scoring chances, stranding at least one base runner in all but the sixth inning. The Warhawks left nine base runners in the game, including two each in the first, third and seventh innings.
 
Savannah Freeman, who improved to 3-3, pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Emily Buck recorded her second save after working three scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk.
 
Hulett (5-7), who went one and one-third innings in Game 2, took the loss after permitting two runs, one earned on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. Amber Coons pitched five and one-third innings of scoreless relief for the Warhawks while allowing no hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
