ULM Softball Falls in Game 2 of Series at No. 14 ULL, 8-6

LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM softball team raced out to a 5-2 lead over No. 14 Louisiana Lafayette, but the Cajuns put together two late-inning rallies for an 8-6 victory Friday night at Lamson Park. With the win, ULL clinched the final Sun Belt Conference series of the regular season.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns (40-9, 21-2 Sun Belt) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a one-out RBI single through the right side by Kendall Talley, scoring Ciara Bryan from third base. Bryan opened the frame with an infield single and stole second.
 
ULM (15-30, 5-15) answered in the top of the second inning. With one away, Andie Edwards was hit by a pitch and Kennedy Johnson followed with a double down the left-field line, advancing Edwards to third base. With two outs, Madison Blount delivered a two-run single down the left-field line, scoring Edwards and Johnson, to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead.
 
ULL managed to tie the game a 2-2 by scoring an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the second, as pinch runner Jenna Kean came home on a throwing error by the pitcher.
 
The Warhawks regained the momentum in the top of the third, scoring three runs on two hits and two ULL errors. Alysia Anderson, who doubled to right center, scored on a throwing error by the pitcher as Kennedy Page executed a sacrifice bunt. Next, Edwards lined out for the second out of the inning, but Korie Kreps scored from second base on a throwing error by the shortstop, who attempted to end the inning with a double play. Johnson followed with an RBI single to center field, scoring Page from second base, as ULM built a 5-2 lead.
 
ULM starter Gianni Hulett retired the Ragin' Cajuns in order in the third and fourth innings.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. ULL loaded the bases, thanks to a hit batter and two walks, and with two outs, Justice Milz hit a grand slam to left center, giving the home team a 6-5 advantage.
 
The Warhawks battled back to tie the game at 6-all, scoring an unearned run with one out in the top of the sixth. Blount led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by third base. Kelsey Giddens, who entered the game as a pinch runner, scored from second base on a throwing error by the shortstop.
 
ULL took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at second and third and one out, Bryan came through with a two-run single through the right side as the Ragin' Cajuns seized an 8-6 advantage.
 
ULM threatened to rally in the top of the seventh. Page opened the frame with a double down the left-field line, but Summer Ellyson retired the next three Warhawk hitters in a row, including two strikeouts.
 
ULM outhit the Ragin' Cajuns, 7-5, as Johnson (2-for-3, run scored, RBI) and Blount (2-for-3, 2 RBI) recorded multi-hit games.
 
Ellyson (20-5) picked up the win in relief for ULL, allowing one unearned run on two hits over three and one-third innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Starter Kandra Lamb went three and two-third innings and surrendered five runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.
 
Hulett (5-8) took the loss after permitting eight runs (seven earned) on five hits with five walks and one strikeout.
 
ULM concludes its three-game series at ULL on Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m.
