ULM Picks Up a Draw in SBC Opener at Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia State rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final 15 minutes of regulation as the ULM soccer team held on for a tie, 3-3, and a point in the Sun Belt Conference opener at the GSU Soccer Complex Thursday night.

"I thought we went about the game in the absolute right way tonight, and at 3-1 up, we were cruising," ULM head coach Sean Fraser said. "That said, two mistakes and a goal we scored that wasn't given have cost us a big win. We will get back to it and we will correct those errors and prepare for Sunday's trip to Coastal."

ULM (6-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 Sun Belt Conference) jumped on top early. In the 11th minute, freshman Lena Göppel scored an unassisted goal, her first of the season, to take the 1-0 lead.

GSU (6-3-2, 1-1-1) responded on a penalty kick by Gracen Crosby in the 24th minute to tie the match at 1.

The score remained tied until late in the first half when ULM junior Courtney Marten took a pass from Theoni Zerva just above the 18-yard box and scored for the 2-1 lead. It was Marten's eighth goal of the season, which puts her two away from tying the school single-season goals record. The score held to halftime.

In the second half, Zerva added to the lead in the 65th minute as she found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Inge Konst. It was Zerva's sixth goal of the season and pushed the ULM lead to 3-1.

GSU started its rally in the 76th minute when Brooklyn Fugel scored to cut the gap to 3-2. Just over three minutes later, Eva Diez Lois knotted the match off an assist from Crosby. ULM and Georgia State were tied at 3 with 11:58 remaining in regulation.

The two sides remained tied to the end of regulation. Georgia State outshot ULM, 5-0, in the first overtime, but the Panthers were unable to break through. In the second overtime, GSU outshot ULM, 4-1. Zerva had a shot on goal for ULM in the 108th minute, but GSU keeper Jaddah Foos made the save. Just 32 seconds later, ULM junior goalkeeper Hailey Hillock stopped a shot on goal by GSU's Bree Barley. The match finished in a tie, 3-3.

Georgia State outshot ULM, 26-14. Each team had nine shots on goal. Zerva had five shots with four on goal, while Goppel had three shots with two on frame. Hillock played all 110 minutes in net and tallied six saves.

ULM continues the road trip with an 11 a.m. match at Coastal Carolina on Sunday.
