CONWAY, S.C. – Junior
Courtney Marten continued her dominant start to the season, as she set the new single-season program record for goals scored, and the ULM soccer team rolled past Coastal Carolina, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
Marten recorded her second hat trick of the season to give her 11 goals in just six matches, breaking the record of 10 previously set by
Janet Stopka (2020-21), Kortney Harris (2004) and Chelsea Shriner (2001). Marten also becomes the first player to record multiple hat tricks in her ULM career.
The Warhawks also picked up a two-goal game from senior
Ermelinda Pantaleao and freshman
Mara Grutkamp opened the scoring on the afternoon. Senior
Theoni Zerva picked up three assists to tie the single-match program record and put her two assists away from matching the single-season assists record.
The victory was ULM's first against a Sun Belt Conference opponent since Oct. 15, 2017, snapping a 30-match winless streak in conference play. The match also marked ULM's largest margin of victory in a Sun Belt Conference match and tied the record for most goals scored in a conference match. The record was set twice previously against Nicholls when ULM was a member of the Southland Conference in 2001 and 2005.
"Throughout this two-game trip, our kids have excelled in every way and have executed everything we have asked of them," ULM head coach
Sean Fraser said. "For that, I am most proud."
The Warhawks jumped on top in the 21st minute when Grutkamp scored off an assist from Henry. ULM doubled the lead just six minutes later when Pantaleao headed home a corner kick from Zerva.
Marten made it a 3-0 game with her first goal of the day in the 35th minute, finishing off a feed from Zerva. The score held to halftime.
In the second half, Marten wasted little time stretching the lead. She finished another pass from Zerva for a goal in the 47th minute to claim a 4-0 lead and tied Stopka, Harris and Shriner for the single-season goals record.
In the 58th minute, Marten broke the record as Zerva found her once again in front of the net for a goal to extend the lead to 5-0.
After Coastal Carolina scored a goal in the 68th minute, Pantaleao finished off a corner kick from
Inge Konst for her second goal of the match and a 6-1 lead.
"We played the game in the areas we wanted to today and I saw a team that is not only still learning, but has learned and then applied some critical things from Thursday until today," Fraser said.
ULM outshot Coastal Carolina, 21-6. The Warhawks had 11 shots on goal to just three for CCU. Marten had seven shots for ULM while Grutkamp had four. Junior
Hailey Hillock earned the win at goalkeeper, coming up with two saves.
The Warhawks face Little Rock at 7 p.m. Friday at Brown Stadium.
