Warhawks Fall on Friday Night to No. 25 Southern Miss, 8-4

MONROE, La. – No. 25 Southern Miss scored four runs in the sixth inning and added three more in the eighth to pull away from ULM, 8-4, Friday night at Lou St. Amant Field.
 
The Golden Eagles (33-15 overall, 18-7 Sun Belt Conference) won their 11th-straight game by taking advantage of four bases on balls and one hit batter in the top of the sixth inning by adding two hits. Christopher Sargent followed Slade Wilks' leadoff walk with a double. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Carson Paetow's 2-RBI single brought in Wilks and Sargent for the 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded walk to Matthew Etzel and Dustin Dickerson's hit by pitch with the bases loaded forced in two more runs for the 5-1 advantage.
 
USM continued to pull away in the eighth inning as Dickerson hit a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 8-2.
 
Southern Miss struck first with Sargent hitting a lead-off home run in the second inning for the 1-0 lead. ULM (16-33, 5-19) answered in the third inning as Travis Washburn led off with a double to center and eventually scored on Carson Jones' RBI groundout to knot the game at 1.
 
Jarrett McDonald hit an RBI double for ULM in the sixth inning, scoring Jones, to cut the deficit to 5-2. McDonald added a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, plating Kade Dupont, and Matt Abshire hit an RBI double in the ninth to bring in Jayson Zmejkoski to cut the deficit to 8-4.
 
Tanner Hall (10-3) earned the win for USM, throwing seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Nicholas Judice (2-3) took the loss for ULM in his second-straight Friday start, tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
 
Davis had two hits and McDonald had two RBIs to lead ULM. Sargent tallied three hits for Southern Miss while Dickerson drove in four runs.
 
Prior to the game, ULM recognized its 2023 senior class: infielder/outfielder Travis Washburn, outfielder Jarrett McDonald and pitcher Kameron Partridge.
 
The series continues at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lou St. Amant Field.
