Warhawks Snap Slide, Top Texas State Friday Night, 6-1

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Nicholas Judice allowed one run over five innings, Trey Lindsay and Chipper Menard combined for four shutout innings out of the bullpen and Matt Abshire paced the offense with three hits as ULM stunned Texas State, 6-1, Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

ULM's win snapped a 12-game Sun Belt Conference losing streak while ending Texas State's nine-game home winning streak and seven-game winning streak in the series.

The Warhawks (17-36 overall, 6-22 Sun Belt Conference) took control early. Riley Davis led off the second inning with a home run, his team-leading eighth of the season. In the third inning, Shawn Dalton Weatherbee hit an RBI single to plate Abshire and Jayson Zmejkoski hit an RBI groundout to score Travis Washburn for a 3-0 lead. Cardell Thibodeaux's leadoff homer in the fourth and an RBI fielder's choice by Weatherbee later in the frame stretched the lead to 5-0.

It was more than enough run support for the ULM pitching staff. Judice hit the first two batters he faced with a pitch, but then induced two fly outs with Abshire throwing out a base runner in between to escape the first inning jam unscathed.

In the second inning, Texas State had runners on first and second base with one out when Ryan Leary hit a single to center field. August Ramirez tried to score from second base, but Washburn threw out Ramirez at the plate to keep the lead and pick up the second out. Judice picked up a fly out to end the inning.

Judice worked around a two-out double in the third inning and gave up a solo home run to Cade Manning with two outs in the fourth inning. In his fifth and final inning, he gave up a one-out bunt single to Kameron Weil but picked up a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning.

Judice (3-3) allowed one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts for the win.

Abshire expanded ULM's lead back to five runs with a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Trey Lindsay worked a scoreless sixth inning out of the bullpen before Chipper Menard threw three shutout innings, with two hits, two walks and three strikeouts, for his first save as a Warhawk.

Tony Robie (5-4) suffered the loss for Texas State (34-21, 16-13), permitting three runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts over three innings in the start.

Abshire had a single and a double in addition to his home run to lead the way with three hits, an RBI and three runs scored. Washburn added two hits. Manning had two hits to lead Texas State.

ULM wraps up the 2023 season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Texas State.
