Soccer Preview: Troy

ULM Soccer will face the Trojans for the final home match of the season, honoring its seniors.

MONROE, La. – The Warhawks (9-2-3, 4-0-3 SBC) will conclude play at home, hosting the Troy Trojans (5-6-3, 0-4-3 SBC) on Sunday (Oct. 19) at 1 p.m. After a victorious season in the Sun Belt and at home, ULM looks to close out a successful home season, honoring several seniors.

SCOUTING THE TROJANS –

Troy is currently 5-6-3 on the season with an 0-4-3 conference record. The Trojans have claimed wins over Stetson, Jacksonville and Southeastern Louisiana in nonconference play, unable to capture a Sun Belt win so far. Most recently, Troy dropped a contest 2-0 at Georgia State and pulled a 1-1 draw against Georgia Southern. Senior Jiselle Daniels leads the team with seven goals and 14 points. Goalkeeper Taylor Richards has claimed Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, second in the Sun Belt with four shutouts and averaging a conference-leading 5.5 saves per game.

UNBEATEN STREAK –

The Warhawks hold the Sun Belt's longest active undefeated streak with 10 matches, dating back to the 2-1 win over Little Rock on August 27. They have outscored opponents 19-9 during the run, with eight of their 19 goals scored by a different player. The Warhawks also remain undefeated at home, as well as unbeaten in Sun Belt play.

SUN BELT HONORS –

Defender Libby Holmes was voted Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week on September 9, after a stellar week. The captain posted a goal against Southern, the second of the match to extend the lead.

Forward Skylar Blaise was voted Offensive Player of the Week on September 23. She posted two goals and an assist to accumulate five points across two matches. Blaise first logged an assist in the first goal against Marshall, scoring her own goal unassisted less than a minute later to tie things up. Against Arkansas State, Blaise scored the game winner with the lone goal of the match.

Blaise went on to win Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on October 7. After securing her third career brace against South Alabama, Blaise then collected three more points at Southern Miss. The senior forward registered an assist, then scored a goal of her own for a seven-point week.

SERIES VS. TROY –

This is the 21st meeting between the Trojans and the Warhawks, with Troy leading the series 12-7-1. The first meeting between the two teams was 2005, a 4-1 Warhawk win in Mobile, Alabama.  After going on a three-match win streak, Troy took over, winning eight in a row against ULM before the streak was broken in 2016. The Warhawks have been unbeaten against the Trojans since 2021, after finding a 1-0 win in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Exactly two years prior to Sunday's match, ULM defeated Troy 3-0 at Brown Stadium. In the last meeting, ULM picked up a 1-0 victory at Troy.

SENIOR DAY –

Sunday's match is senior day, in addition to being the final home match of the season. 12 seniors will be recognized following the match, celebrating their final game in Brown Stadium. Defender Ally Richardson, midfielder Janne Van Brummelen, forward Ava Goodman, forward Skylar Blaise, midfielder Margret Edda Bjarnadottir, midfielder Ines de Lope Casanova, midfielder Leane Commaret, midfielder Giulia Franco, forward Jaden Masters, midfielder Marisol Gomez, defender Sophia Youngman and goalkeeper Maddox Dolly will be honored in the senior day celebration.

TRAILBLAISER –

Skylar Blaise has continued to lead the Warhawks and currently leads the Warhawks in multiple categories. The senior leads the conference in goals (10), ranking second in NCAA Soccer. She has reached the record books in season goals, season points, career goals and career shots on goal to name a few. Blaise was recognized as Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week on September 23 and again on October 7. She scored her third career brace on October 2 against South Alabama in the 2-2 draw and tallied three points (1g, 1a) against Southern Miss just three days later. The senior also leads the conference in shot accuracy (.581).

BANKING ON BJARNADOTTIR –

Margret Edda Bjarnadottir may be in her first season with ULM, but is making her mark quickly. With nine assists this season, she is just two away from breaking the season assist record. Her assists also lead the Sun Belt, ranking second nationally. She averages 0.64 assists per game, placing her first in the conference and fifth in the NCAA.

LAST TIME OUT –

MONROE, La. – A late goal by Giulia Franco in the 84th minute lifted the ULM soccer team to a 3-2 win over App State on Saturday night. Skylar Blaise and Ines de Lope Casanova combined for the assists on the score.

The Mountaineers started with the lead early, as Reagan Sturgill struck for her first goal of the season to put them up 1-0. Franco, Blaise, and Ally Richardson combined for three shots within the first ten minutes, but none were on target.

In the 31st minute, the Warhawks got a second opportunity off a corner kick, which Beth Strutton did not miss. Her third goal of the year, assisted by Margret Edda Bjarnadottir, not only put ULM on the board but also showed the result of the continuous Warhawk pressure throughout the match.

Both teams started evenly in the second half with two shots total. In the 59th minute, a well-aimed pass by de Lope Casanova sailed across the field right to Blaise, who turned a breakaway into a lead-taking goal.

With the Mountaineers finally getting the ball in the Warhawks' zone, Olivia Simon drove in an unassisted goal for the late equalizer in the 82nd minute. ULM didn't flinch as it brought possession into the Mountaineer zone, building momentum until the final score by Franco.
