Women’s Basketball Preview: Ragin’ Cajuns

The Warhawks are on the hunt for a their second-consecutive win in Lafayette.

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (9-15, 5-8) hits the road for Lafayette, facing the Ragin' Cajuns (11-12, 7-6). Tip-off in the Cajundome is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 15). The Warhawks are on the hunt for a win to break a losing streak, while the Cajuns are looking to capitalize off a Sun Belt win.

SERIES HISTORY –

The Warhawks and the Ragin' Cajuns will be competing for the 68th time in the series, a series dating back to ULM's first season in 1974. ULM is looking to claim a win over the Cajuns, as it would be their second-consecutive win in Lafayette. The Warhawks have not swept the series since 2013. The most recent matchup for the two teams was Feb. 3, 2024, when the Cajuns defeated ULM 52-73 in Monroe.

SCOUTING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS –

The Cajuns are looking to capitalize off a Sun Belt win over Texas State. They are also on the hunt for their fourth-consecutive Sun Belt win in the Cajundome. Erica Lafayette leads the team in points per game (15.0), also leading in free throw percentage (.853) and rebounds (109). Skylah Travis picked up a double-double last week over Marshall, leading the team in field goal percentage (.568). 

LEADING THE TEAM –

Jakayla Johnson currently leads the team in points per game (15.7), three-point percentage (.361), assists (78) and steals (44). Johnson is third in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage (.824) and points per game, as well as seventh in field goal percentage (.413). 

Sakyia White opened the season going 9-9 vs. Central Baptist (Nov. 4), dropping 18 points and now leads the team in field goal percentage (.483). She then followed up with a 16-rebound performance vs. Tulane (Dec. 21) and two 14-rebound showings, last at Troy (Feb. 12), leading the team in rebounds per game (8.2) and fourth in the Sun Belt. White also led the team with 19 points at South Alabama (Feb. 8), her fourth game this season leading the team in scoring.

RAINING TRIPLES –

In conference play, the Warhawks are second in the Sun Belt in three-point field goal percentage (.361), behind only App State. The team combined for 10 three-pointers against App State (Feb. 5) for the second time this season, last versus Central Baptist (Nov. 4). Meloney Thames dropped 22 points against Georgia Southern (Jan. 2), shooting five three-pointers, a team-high this season. Just two days later, Nya Valentine hit five shots beyond the arc against Old Dominion, three coming in the final 30 seconds of the game. Valentine went on to go 3-3 from beyond the arc versus Texas State (Feb. 1). Thames has hit five threes in three separate games, most recently at Troy (Feb. 12), scoring 26.

LOOKING AHEAD –

The women's basketball team will return home for the final two games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum this season, taking on Troy on Thursday (Feb. 20). Tip-off for ULM and the Trojans will be at 6:30 p.m. The Warhawks will be recognizing Black History Month at the game as well.
