Women’s Basketball Preview: at Marshall

The Warhawks looking to continue a two-game win streak after finding success at home.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The ULM women's basketball team (11-16, 7-9) hits the road for the final road trip of the regular season, facing Marshall (10-18, 5-11). Tip-off in the Cam Henderson Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday (Feb. 26). The Warhawks are on the hunt to continue their momentum after back-to-back wins at home, while the Herd is looking to continue momentum after two wins on the road.

SERIES HISTORY –

The Warhawks and the Ragin' Cajuns will be competing for the fourth time in the series, a series dating back to 2008. ULM is looking to claim a win over the Herd, having not won against them since 2008, the win also being the lone contest held at Marshall. The most recent matchup for the two teams was Feb. 24, 2024, when the Herd defeated ULM 90-99 in Monroe. The margin of victory is very small for these two teams, neither team having won by a double-digit margin in the series.

SCOUTING THE HERD –

The Herd is looking to compete with the Warhawks after claiming two dominant wins on the road, most recently to Georgia State. Aislynn Hayes leads the team in points per game (18.0), also leading in assists (76). Hayes dropped 26 over the Panthers in Atlanta and 29 over App State in last week's win over the Mountaineers, claiming Sun Belt Player of the Week honors. CC Mays picked up seven boards over Georgia State, averaging 4.9 rebounds per game.

LEADING THE TEAM –

Jakayla Johnson currently leads the team in points per game (15.8), three-point percentage (.368), assists (90) and steals (48). Johnson is third in the Sun Belt in points per game and free throw percentage (.820) and eighth in field goal percentage (.414).

Sakyia White opened the season going 9-9 vs. Central Baptist (Nov. 4), dropping 18 points and now leads the team in field goal percentage (.464). She then followed up with a 16-rebound performance vs. Tulane (Dec. 21) and two 14-rebound showings, last at Troy (Feb. 12). White also led the team with 19 points at South Alabama (Feb. 8), her fourth game this season leading the team in scoring. White currently leads the team in rebounds per game (8.2), ranking fourth in the Sun Belt.

Meloney Thames has reached the 20+-point mark six times this season, most recently versus Troy (Feb. 20), scoring 22. She has led the team in scoring 10 times, averaging 14 points per game. Thames can frequently be found shooting beyond the arc, most recently shooting 5-8 (.625) from three against Troy.

1K FOR JK –

By scoring 10 points at the Ragin' Cajuns, senior Jakayla Johnson reached 1,000 career points. Johnson spent one season at Auburn before transferring to ULM for her junior and senior seasons. She is the 19th Warhawk to reach the milestone, first reached by Marlena Mossbarger (1977-80).
