MONROE, La. – It was the tale of the three-pointer as the ULM Warhawks (3-15, 0-6 Sun Belt) fell at Fant-Ewing Coliseum to the Georgia State Panthers (6-12, 3-3 Sun Belt). While the teams went back and forth from beyond the arc in the first half, a margin of 16 triples to eight across the game set up the Panthers for a victory.
Renars Sondors led the team in scoring with an 18-point game, dropping three triples and pulling down six boards.
MJ Russell followed close behind with 17 points, also hitting three three-pointers.
Lavell Brodnex led on the defense, pulling down nine rebounds and posting two blocks.
For the Panthers, Micah Tucker and Malachi Brown both saw 20-point games, both of them also hitting six triples apiece in the win. Jelani Hamilton closed out the double-digit scorers with 17 points for Georgia State.
ULM's Lewis started things off, hitting a step back jumper to find the 2-0 lead in the opening minutes. But Georgia State began hitting shots from beyond the arc as the Panthers worked to set up a comfortable lead. ULM tried to respond, with
Dylan Diaz and Sondors hitting a few, but the Panthers stretched the lead to nine points at the halfway point of the first half.
As both teams began trading triples, the Warhawks were able to snag steals and cut the lead to a one-possession game. Even as Georgia State tried to regain the lead, the clock began to run down as the Warhawks continued to hit shots. An alley-oop from Diaz to
Ayomide Bamisile gave the ULM their first lead since the opening score, holding the one-point advantage when the first half concluded, 39-38.
The eighth three-pointer of a total 16 by the Panthers gave the visitors the lead in the second half. While Russell tried to turn the tides back to ULM, Georgia State continued to match the three-pointers for the advantage. A handful of triples gave the Panthers a momentum shift to score 26 unanswered points as the half continued. With the Warhawks held by the Panther defense, Georgia State stretched the lead to 20 points. Even as the Panthers saw a scoring drought to allow an opportunity for the home team, the deficit was too much to overcome as the clock wound down with a 77-57 final score.
ULM will hit the road for a two-week stretch, first traveling east to take on Marshall at 6 p.m. CT / 7 p.m. ET on January 22.
