Track and Field Preview: LSU Alumni Gold

The Warhawks travel to the state's capital for a one-day meet on Saturday.

MONROE, La. – ULM track and field stays in the state of Louisiana with a trip to Baton Rouge for the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday, Apr. 25.
 
There will be 12 teams from Louisiana competing at the meet. Alongside the host in LSU, other teams include the Ragin' Cajuns, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern State, and Southeastern.
 
Last Time Out –
The Warhawks traveled to Ruston to compete in the Jim Mize Relays last Friday. The team totaled eight event wins and 23 total podium finishes. For the men, five events were won on the day. Matthew Malcolm placed first in the 400m hurdles event with a time of 52.44, while Raymond Gomez (4:05.11) and Chase Gunn (8:49.89) won the 1500m and 3000m events. The 4x400m relay team of Imani Coleman, Thibault Buchard, Santana Richardson and Malcolm took first in the event as Joshua Qualls won his first event of the season in the hammer throw.
 
The women took first in three events in the 1500m, 3000m and shot put. Maya Nobes won the 1500m with a time of 4:44.20, while Tuva Sandberg finished at the top of the list in the 3000m with a 10:24.59 result. Macy Lee Hale won first place in the shot put with a distance of 12.89m.
 
Hammer to Fall –
The Warhawks have presented a strong hammer throw group in the 2026 outdoor season. Francisco Calhau leads the way in the men's event, reaching the podium in all four meets he competed in with two wins. His career-best 65.92m distance ranks first in the Sun Belt Conference and second in the South-Central Region. He was named Sun Belt Men's Field Athlete of the Week this season. Benedikt Schweizer is also a top athlete, with his 64.88m result being second and third best in the Sun Belt and region. In the women's event, Sydney Lake has three wins and four total podiums in the season. She achieved a career-high mark of 59.59m, which ranks third in the Sun Belt.
 
Roach Extermination –
An all-American in the 2025 outdoor season, Stafon Roach made his 2026 outdoor debut in the triple jump last weekend at the Texas A&M 44 Farms Team Invitational. He reached a mark of 15.82m, which secured first place in the event. His mark ranks first in the Sun Belt, second in the East division and eighth in the NCAA. He is also the reigning indoor champion in the event. Roach is the most recent recipient of the Sun Belt Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor.
 
Owning the Discus –
Raquel Gomes produced a strong result in the women's discus throw this past weekend in College Station. She collected a result of 52.68m in the event, good for second place. Her mark is atop the conference while also being in the top ten in the region. The thrower earned Sun Belt Women's Field Athlete of the Week recently, the first Warhawk to do so since 2024.
 
Next Up –
The Warhawks return to Monroe to host the annual Warhawk Classic from Friday, May 1, through Saturday, May 2.
