MONROE, La. – Tylor Ongwae from the ULM men's basketball program earned his fourth consecutive Warhawk Male of the Week award, while
Ashleigh Simmons from the women's program was named Warhawk Female of the Week for the third time.
Ongwae, a junior from Eldoret, Kenya, turned in a big performance in ULM's last outing against Georgia State on Saturday where he registered a double-double, matching his career-high with 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season and his 13th double-figure scoring game in 15 contests.
Against WKU, Ongwae tallied a team-high 11 points. He has led the team in scoring in all seven league games this season with double-figures. The Georgia State game was his sixth 20-plus point performance and his second double-digit rebounding game of the season.
On the season, Ongwae leads the Warhawks in points (16.2 ppg), free throw percentage (.828) and blocks (13). He also averages 5.2 rebounds per contest and is second on the team with 15 steals.
Ashleigh Simmons recorded double-doubles in both games last week for ULM, giving her three-straight double-doubles and the senior has tallied seven total double-doubles this season. For the week, Simmons averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 50.0% from the floor and 77.8% from the charity stripe.
In the midweek tilt against WKU, Simmons tallied 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the heartbreaking loss to the Lady Toppers. The Hawkins, Texas native connected on eight field goals and knocked down four free throws in the four-point loss to WKU.
Three days later, against Georgia State, Simmons was at it again, this time pouring in 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds (including seven on the offensive glass). Simmons was strong at the line in the game, shooting 83.3% (10-12) and she also dished out two assists.
The women's team will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., while the men take the court on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.; both teams play Arkansas State at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
