Warhawks Enjoy 30 Top-5 Finishes to Open 2019 Outdoor Season

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The ULM track and field team began its 2019 outdoor season by finishing second overall in the McNeese Cowboy Relays/Bob Hayes Louisiana Challenge Saturday (March 10), earning 30 Top-5 individual finishes along the way. The top men's individual performer was Micah Dye (discus), who placed first, while Jasmine Scott-Kilgo highlighted the women's unit with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump.
 
ULM claimed second overall in the Bob Hayes Louisiana Challenge with 208 combined points (men's and women's teams), finishing behind host McNeese, which compiled 330 total points.
 
Dye, the only men's performer with multiple Top-5 outings, snagged first in discus with a toss of 156-feet, 9-inches, and was third in the shot put with a heave of 52-9 1/2.
 
Two members of the women's unit managed multiple Top-5 outings, including Alivia Busch, who had three, and Scott-Kilgo, who had two. Busch's afternoon included a second-place outing in the shot put (43-2 1/4), fourth-place in the hammer throw (147-1) and a fifth-place performance in the discus (130-9). Scott-Kilgo reached the podium in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.71) and long jump (18-5 1/4), placing second in both events.
 
Brianna Sam also reached the podium for the Warhawks, placing second in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 167-6. Women's teammates Micaiah Dendy (40-1 1/2) and Sharon Jerono (10:32.77) finished second in the triple jump and 3000-meter steeplechase, respectively.
 
Mason Nichols capped off the men's javelin with a second-place performance, following a toss of 181-2. Teammates Grant Girtman (15 1/4) and Levaughn Battick (14.53) reached the podium by placing third in the pole vault and 110-meter hurdles, respectively.
 
ULM was well represented in the women's 400-meter hurdles by the duo of Jasmine Williams (1:05.85) and Ashlyn Pack (1:06.26), finishing third and fourth, respectively.
 
The trio of Ava Paul, Fiebe Tengrootenhuysen and Edith Jebet emerged with Top-5 finishes in the event. Paul was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.90, while Tengrootenhuysen (12.35) and Jebet (11:02.46) were both fifth in their respective events.
 
Distance runners Elias Keter and Eric Hawkins made their presence felt for the ULM men's unit. Keter closed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:01.77), while Hawkins was fifth in the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:11.15. Meanwhile, Zach Kilpatrick took fifth in the men's 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 58.49.
 
Cole Burgess cleared 15 1/4 in the pole vault to finish fourth. The tandem of Jakob Fudge and Ray Dixon finished fifth in the field events. Fudge emerged with a toss of 175-2 in the hammer throw while Dixon had a heave of 139-7 in the discus.
 
The six remaining Top-5 finishes for the Warhawks came in the relay events, including the women's 4x200 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay units placing third. The Warhawk men had a fourth-place performance by the 4x200 meter relay unit and a fifth-place finish by the 4x100 meter relay team. The women's 'B' teams finished fourth in both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay races.
 
The Warhawks return to the track on Friday, March 15 when they compete in the Louisiana Classics, hosted by the Ragin' Cajuns.
