Hammond, La. - Southeastern Louisiana scored four runs in the fourth inning to break the game open and never let ULM closer than two runs the rest of the way in a 10-3 victory over the Warhawks on Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The Lions opened the scoring with a two-RBI single by Nick Ray in the fourth inning, and added two more runs on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error on the relay throw to lead 4-0 after the fourth inning.
ULM added a pair of runs in the fifth with two-out singles from
Ryan Humeniuk and
Trent Tingelstad, scoring
Braedon Barrett and Humeniuk respectively to trail 4-2.
SLU took a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Kyle Schimpf. ULM tallied another of their own in the top of the sixth when
Nathan Miranda reached on a throwing error, allowing
Cameron Horton to score to trail 5-3.
The Lions answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of RBI doubles, one from Connor Manola and another from Trey Harrington. The Lions then put the game away with three more runs in the seventh with RBIs for Brennan Breaud, Ray and Manola.
Beesley had two hits to pace the ULM offense while Humeniuk and Tingelstad had an RBI each. The Warhawks mustered just six hits in the contest. Preston Faulkner, Breaud and Ray had two hits each for the Lions, with SLU tallying nine hits on the game. They also took advantage of four walks and three hit batters issued by ULM pitching, as well as three errors by the Warhawk defense. SLU also committed three errors in the game.
"Southeastern did a great job of taking advantage of our mistakes tonight," head coach
Michael Federico said. "It's difficult to win baseball games with poor communication and errors we made."
Cole Martin (0-2) takes the loss in the start, giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits with two walks and one strikeout in 3.1 innings.
Logan McDowell tossed the final inning and two-thirds, giving up no runs on one hit with no walks and two strikeouts. Kade Granier picked up the win in relief for SLU, throwing 1.2 innings with a run on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Warhawks and Lions play the final game of their quick two-game set tomorrow in Hammond. Right-hander
