Big Innings Doom Warhawks; Second Game Suspended Due to Fog

Boone, N.C. - Appalachian State used two big innings, scoring five runs in the sixth inning and five more in the eighth, to rally past ULM on Saturday 10-8 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader Saturday at Beaver Field at Smith Stadium. The second game was suspended when fog rolled in with ULM leading 3-1 in the top of the third inning.

The first game featured two rain delays and a 20-minute delay as umpires deliberated on an interference call.

ULM (15-20 overall, 5-9 Sun Belt) took the initial lead on back-to-back RBI doubles by Joey Jordan and Trent Tingelstad in the third inning to go up 2-0. Tingelstad limped into second base and left the game with an apparent injury. ULM made it 3-0 in the third inning when Logan Wurm's single drove in Ryan Humeniuk.

Appalachian State jumped on the board in a big way in the sixth inning. Luke Drumheller hit an RBI double to get the Mountaineers on the board, and an RBI single by Kendall McGowan plated Drumheller. A throw to the plate to try and throw out Drumheller was wide and eventually went to the backstop after ULM pitcher Ty Barnes, who was backing up the play, collided with Drumheller after he had crossed the plate. The play allowed McGowan to move to second base, but umpires initially had a short deliberation and ruled interference on Drumheller, and returned McGowan to first base. After another appeal from App State, two umpires left the field and returned to the umpire room in the press box for nearly 15 minutes before returning to the field and confirming the ruling on the play. After the lengthy delay, ULM coach Michael Federico elected to go to the bullpen for a fresh arm. However, Miles Dunn gave up an RBI single to Phillip Cole and a 2-run home run to Joel McDaniel to give App State a 5-3 lead.

ULM answered in the eighth inning. The inning opened with a light rain, which grew heavier as the inning continued. Colin Gordon walked, Chad Bell singled and Andrew Beesley walked to load the bases for Blake Buckman, who hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Gordon, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Humeniuk walked to re-load the bases, and Masen Prososki was hit by a pitch to bring home Bell to tie the game. Wurm worked ahead to a 2-0 count when the game entered a 50-minute rain delay. Out of the delay, Wurm added a base hit to centerfield, scoring Beesley and Humeniuk to take a 7-5 lead. Prososki scored on a wild pitch for the 8-5 advantage.

However, Mother Nature wasn't done just yet. ULM pitchers Jacob Barton and Kolton Childress had to battle the rain in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cole led off the bottom of the eighth with a double and McDaniel followed with a walk to force the pitching change to Childress. Riley Smith walked to load the bases, and Luke Allison followed with an RBI single to cut the gap to 8-6. Robbie Young then hit a 2-RBI single to tie the game at 8, but Allison was thrown out after taking too wide of a turn at second base on the play. After Childress struck out Alex Leshock, CJ Brown singled to put two runners on for Luke Drumheller when the rain once again became too much to handle. After a delay of nearly two hours, Drumheller walked to load the bases, and McGowan hit a 2-RBI single to give App a 10-8 lead.

Bell doubled to lead off the ninth inning, but was stranded at second base.

Logan Wurm had three hits and three RBIs to pace the ULM offense. Bell was 3-for-5 with two singles and a double.

The Warhawks and Mountaineers played the first three innings of the series finale before fog rolled in. After App scored a run in the first inning, Braedon Barrett connected for a bases-clearing double in the second to give the Warhawks a 3-1 lead. ULM leads 3-1 with one out and a 3-1 count on Bell when play is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.
