THE BASICS
• Following a historic regular season, the ULM softball team earned the No. 6 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship and is set to play the No. 3-seeded South Alabama Jaguars in the quarterfinals on Thursday (May 9) at 4 p.m. from the Bobcat Softball Stadium in San Marcos, Texas on the campus of Texas State.
• The Warhawks secured the highest number of Sun Belt wins in a single season (12) in program history and the most regular season wins since 1997 after going 31-23. ULM finished the regular season with a sweep at Georgia State and bounced back after dropping eight-straight conference games versus a trio of opponents in the top 75 RPI. After starting the season with a 14-5 record in February, ULM won seven-straight Sun Belt Conference games starting in late March after sweeping Marshall and Georgia Southern and winning the series opener at Troy. ULM's seven-game conference winning streak was its longest since the 2002 season. The Warhawks were off to the best 40-game start since 2017, which was the last winning season for ULM.
•  Lourdes Bacon has been the catalsyt for the Warhawks' offense, and earned All-Sun Belt Softball Second Team honors for the second time in her ULM career. A Warhawk has appeared on the All-Sun Belt Softball Team in 12 of the last 14 years. Bacon is the first ULM softball player to win multiple All-Sun Belt honors since Jayden Mount did so in 2021. Bacon, a senior outfielder from San Antonio, Texas, led ULM with a .389 batting average, 70 hits, 40 runs and 25 stolen bases. She ended the season second in the Sun Belt in stolen bases, third in total hits and fifth in batting average. In conference play, Bacon ranked tied for sixth with 31 hits and tied for fifth with seven stolen bases.Â
•  As a team, ULM paced the Sun Belt in total stolen bases (87) and stolen bases per game (1.61/game). Also appearing with Bacon in the conference stolen bases leaderboard is newcomer Carys Platt, who ranks 5th in the SBC with 18 stolen bases. The junior from Fellsmere, Fla. racked up 58 hits, which was the 13th-highest in the league. Platt played two seasons at Florida Southwestern State College and led her team to a pair of NJCCA National Championships.
• In the circle, LSU transfer Victoria Abrams is 11-11 in 24 starts this season and has pitched three complete-game shutouts, including a five-inning perfect game in ULM's run-rule win over Green Bay in February. Sophomore pitcher Maddie Nichols enters the tournament ranked seventh in the conference with 111 strikeouts. The West Monroe, La., native has tossed five complete games, including a pair of seven-inning wins versus Lindenwood and Syracuse. Redshirt junior Gianni Hulett returned to the ULM pitching mix in March and threw 17.2 consecutive innings without surrendering a run, a streak that was broken in the Troy series. Hulett has a team-high four saves, which is the third-highest total in the SBC. Senior Kassidy Giddens has posted a 2.20 ERA in 54 innings and racked up two complete games and two shutouts.
• Senior Andie Edwards hit 10 sacrifice flys in the regular season, which is the highest in the nation. Edwards hit .250 with 13 extra-base hits, including a double and a home run at Georgia State. Layla Thompson has hit two doubles and three home runs in 17 starts during conference play at third base. Jacelyn Buck tallied nine extra-base hits and played 47 games in the infield for the Warhakwks in her redshirt junior season.
• Four freshman have made a significant impact for the Warhawks this season., Meagan Brown, Brooklin Lippert, Elle Carter and Maryssa Zenzen have all been key contributors to ULM's success. Brown, a freshman outfielder from Katy, Texas, has powered 19 extra-base hits and has driven in a team-high 39 RBIs in her first collegiate season. Brown led all Sun Belt freshman with a .367 batting average. Lippert, a utility player from Loganville, Ga., hit .314 with 38 hits and 27 runs scored. Carter, a graduate of Neville High School, has made 46 starts for the Warhawks and has tallied seven extra-base hits and 12 RBIs in her first collegiate season while making just five errors in the field at shortstop. Zenzen, a Waller, Texas, native, rounds out the freshman contributors with a .253 batting average, which includes four doubles, one triple and a pair of home runs.
• South Alabama swept the regular season series in Monroe back in March, with two of the three games decided by one run. The Warhawks fell to the Jaguars in the finale by a score of 5-4 in a 13-inning marathon game, which was the longest ULM softball game by innings since 2018. The Jags have dominated the all-time series, leading 46-9, and have won the last 11 games versus ULM. The Warhawks' last win versus South Alabama was in 2019, when ULM took two out of three games versus the Jaguars.The last time the two teams met in the SBC Tournament was 2017, when USA won 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
