NATCHITOCHES, La. – The ULM tennis team has started their fall season, competing in the Lady Demon Invitational, hosted by Northwestern State, on Saturday and Sunday.
In the Purple Singles Draw,
Lucia Jorrin Fernandez fell to Angelique Berrat of the Ragin' Cajuns and Tyler Junior College's Candy Wai.
Mariam Hatem fell to Salome Fluri of McNeese and Northwestern State's Tjasa Klevisar. Hatem and Fernandez competed against each other for seventh place, Hatem taking the match (6-2, 6-4).
In the Yellow Singles Draw,
Vanja Cado took a loss against Zoi Spyrou of Northwestern State and the Ragin' Cajuns' Ana Martinez Vaquero before capturing her first collegiate win versus Amelia Devlin (TJC) for the seventh place spot (6-3, 6-1).
In the Round Robin, both
Mariia Iordanova and
Raquel Alvaro captured wins, Iordanova remaining undefeated in singles play. Alvaro fell to Natalia Garcia (TJC) before taking the win over Valeria Ortega (Northwestern State) (4-6, 6-2, 10-6). Iordanova posted two wins: versus Stella Rundova (McNeese) and versus Garcia.
In the Orange Singles Draw,
Camila Molina Barranco went on a roll, beating Sherin Scheerle (TJC) and Nina Krecklenberg (Ragin' Cajuns) to reach the championship round. She claimed second place, falling to Rocio Navarro (Ragin' Cajuns) on Sunday morning.
Tingyi Li fell to Alexa Martinez (McNeese) but claimed her first Warhawk singles win versus Scheerle for seventh place.
When it came to doubles play, duo Hatem and Fernandez fell to the first place duo Spyrou/Klevisar (Northwestern State), before taking losses versus Vaquero/Berrat (Ragin' Cajuns) and fellow teammates Cado/Molina. Cado and Molina fell to Prulla/Navarro (Ragin' Cajuns) and Farina/Doberlet (Northwestern State) before claiming their first win versus teammates Hatem/Fernandez for seventh place.
Li and Alvaro claimed their first win against Dol/Scheerle (TJC) before falling to Krecklenberg/Skowronska (Ragin' Cajuns). Iordanova competed doubles with Tyler Junior College's Natalia Garcia in the Grey Doubles Draw, falling to Umeda/Ortega (Northwestern State).
ULM tennis will travel to Auburn, Ala. for the ITA Southern Regional Championships, set to begin on Thursday, Oct. 10.
