The ULM men's basketball team (6-17, 2-8) will open February at Troy (14-7, 7-3) on Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon at Trojan Arena. The Warhawks are attempting to win its third-straight Sun Belt Conference game as the Warhawks won back-to-back contests over South Alabama earlier this week.Â
ULM is looking for its first three-game winning streak since last February, when the Warhawks defeated Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan and Southern Miss. A win on Saturday would be ULM's first road winning streak since the 2022-23 season when ULM defeated Arkansas State and Georgia Southern on the road.
SERIES HISTORY –
ULM is looking to snap a six-game losing streak to Troy on Saturday. The last time the Warhawks defeated the Trojans was in February 2020 when ULM edged the Trojans by three points in Trojan Arena. Troy has won the previous two matchups versus the Warhawks at home by double digits and leads the all-time series 17-11.Â
SCOUTING THE TROJANS –
Troy carries a three-game home winning streak into Saturday's game after the Trojans defeated South Alabama, Southern Miss and Georgia Southern at home. Troy is 9-3 at home this season and is in sole possesion of second place in the Sun Belt standings.
Tayton Conerway is one of the league's most dynamic scorers and is averaging 17.1 points per game in conference contests. Connerway scored 10 points the last time these two teams met. Cooper Campbell was Troy's leading scorer with 16 points and Thomas Dowd netted 13 facing ULM back in January.
RICHARD ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AT CONCLUSION OF SEASON–
ULM men's basketball coach Keith Richard announced on Friday (Dec. 20) his intention to retire at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. Richard will complete his 15th season as the head coach of ULM men's basketball. Richard inherited a program saddled with APR sanctions and guided the Warhawks to four postseason appearances in five years. Richard previously served as the head coach of Louisiana Tech from 1998-2007 and was an assistant at LSU from 2008-10 before being named ULM's head coach and has accumulated over 300 victories as a head coach.
FAMILIAR FACES –
The Warhawks welcome back 10 players from the 2023-24 roster including starters Tyreese Watson, Jalen Bolden and Jerry Ngopot. Key role players including Jacob Wilson, Makai Willis and AD Diedhiou are also back after playing in more than 10 games last season.
KEY ADDITIONS –
The 2024 ULM men's basketball signing class featured four new Warhawks to the 2024-25 roster. ULM signed two high school prospects (Micah Caster & Renars Sondors), one four-year transfer (Coltie Young) and one junior college transfer (Ta'Zir Smith) in the 2024 class. Additionaly, Phil Cunningham was introduced as an assistant head coach during the offseason. Cunningham brings over 25 years of collegiate coaching experience at the Division I level.
MILESTONE WATCH –
Senior guard Coltie Young enters Saturday's game 13 points shy of the 1,000 career points milestone. Young played three seasons at Jackson State before transferring to ULM this season and totaled 713 points for the Tigers. Young recorded his third 20-point game of the season with 27 points in ULM's win over South Alabama on Monday and tallied 17 in Thursday's game.
