Men’s Basketball Preview: ETSU MTE

The Warhawks hit the road for Tennessee, facing Morehead State and East Tennessee State over the weekend in a multi-team event.

MONROE, La. – The ULM men's basketball team (1-4) takes a roadtrip up to Johnson City, Tenn. for the ETSU MTE this weekend. Saturday's game features Morehead State (2-3) at 6 p.m., while Sunday will bring on the host East Tennessee State at 3 p.m. CT.
 
SERIES HISTORY –
The Warhawks and Eagles have faced off only twice in both programs' histories, with the former taking both matchups. Although ULM has won both games, the combined margin of victory is three points, with the last matchup being a 74-73 win in Morehead, Ky. 
 
ULM and ETSU have also played twice with a series split at 1-1. The Warhawks won the first matchup in 1973 with an 85-80 score, but the Bucs took the most recent game with a final score of 86-77 in Tokyo, Japan.
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES –
Morehead State sits at 2-3 with their most recent result being a 121-51 win over Kentucky Christian last Sunday. In 2024, the team finished 15-17 with a 10-10 Ohio Valley Conference record, falling in the first round of the tournament to Lindenwood. Guard Georgia Marshall leads the team in scoring with 14.8 ppg going 24-51 with 11 three pointers. Jon Carroll leads in rebounds with seven per game, while Josiah LeGree is the top assister with 28 total on the season.
 
SCOUTING THE BUCS –
ETSU possesses a 3-1 record on the year, last defeating North Alabama with a score of 78-74. In
2024, the Bucs finished 19-13 overall with a 12-6 Southern Conference mark, and were eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament at the hands of Wofford. Brain Taylor II and Cam Morris III both lead in scoring with 14.3 and 14.0 points per game, respectively. Isaiah Sutherland is the top rebounder with 6.0 rebounds per game.
 
FROM BEYOND THE ARC –
The Warhawks are currently shooting 34% from three, already hitting 39 triples across five games. The 39 three-pointers ranks eighth in the Sun Belt. MJ Russell leads the team with ten triples, ranking 13th in the conference.
 
LEADING THE PACK –
MJ Russell leads the pack in scoring, averaging 16.6 points. He also leads in three-pointers made (10). Krystian Lewisaverages 4.2 assists, 3.8 defensive rebounds and 35.8 minutes a game to lead the team. Renars Sondors has collected 16 rebounds across four games, averaging 4.0 to lead the Warhawks. Freshman Przemek Hartman averages 0.8 blocks per game, collecting two in the season opener.
