Women's Basketball Preview: Indiana

The Warhawks are prepped for their first ever meeting with the Hoosiers.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The ULM women's basketball team (5-3) hit the road for the second time this week as they travel to Bloomington to take on Indiana (8-2). Tip-off at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Thursday (Dec. 11). The Warhawks are coming off a 75-38 loss at Alabama.
 
SERIES HISTORY –
 
ULM and Indiana are set to meet for the first time in their histories. The last time ULM faced a team from the Big 10 was in an 82-66 win at Minnesota on Dec. 1, 1984. This will also be the first trip to the state of Indiana for the Warhawks as the only other time they have faced opposition from the Hoosier State was Ball State on Nov. 24, 2001, on a neutral floor in Los Angeles, Calif.

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS –
 
Indiana enter Thursday's game at 8-2 on the season and are coming off of a 78-57 loss in their Big 10 opener at Illinois. The Hoosiers are led by senior Shay Ciezki who is tied for first in the Big 10 and is top-10 in the nation in scoring averaging 24.3 points per game. Lenée Beaumont is second on the team with 14.9 points per game and is tied with Ciezki for the team lead with 31 assists. Indiana have been efficient shooting the ball this season as they sit inside the top-40 teams in the nation in field goal percentage at 47.2 percent and free throw percentage at 77 percent.
 
ULM vs. P4 –
 
The last time ULM beat a Power Four opponent was Feb. 15, 1994, when they beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 81-64 in Monroe. The Warhawks' Power Four opponent in their past two matchups have been from the SEC in Alabama and Mississippi State. The last time ULM faced a team from the Big 10 was in an 82-66 win at Minnesota on Dec. 1, 1984.
 
LEADING THE WAY –
 
ULM feature a balanced scoring attack as five different players average at least 8.3 points per game. J'Mani Ingram leads the team averaging 10 points per game, followed by Asjah Inniss (8.6), Marcavia Shavers (8.5), Jazmine Jackson (8.4) and Keshunti Nichols (8.3). Marcavia Shavers averages 7 rebounds per game to lead the team while Nakiyah Mays-Prince has posted a team best average of 3.8 assists per game. Asjah Inniss leads the team in steals with 14 while Keshunti Nichols has paced the team with four blocks this season. Jazmine Jackson has held firm as the team's top shooting option beyond the arc as she has connected on 15 of her 30 three-point attempts.
 
DANGEROUS DEFENSE –
 
The Warhawks have shown impressive defensive consistency during the early stages of this season. ULM are fourth in the Sun Belt, allowing only 60.4 points per game. Prior to their last game at Alabama, the Warhawks had not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 45 percent from the field in a game this season. As a team, ULM are still holding their opponents to a 39.4 field goal percentage for the season.
 
FREQUENTLY FORCING TURNOVERS –

ULM have been prolific this season when it comes to causing their opponents to make mistakes. The Warhawks are ranked inside the top-50 in all of Division I with 21.4 turnovers forced per game. ULM have seen three different players establish career highs for steals in a game this year. Graduate student Keshunti Nichols recorded four steals vs. Louisiana Tech, junior Kamille Brown posted five steals vs. Grambling State and graduate student Asia Barclay notched five steals at Alabama. As a team, the Warhawks are inside the top-80 teams in Division I averaging 10.4 steals per game and have seen five players record at least one game of three steals or more so far this season.
 
RELENTLESS REBOUNDING –
 
Graduate student Marcavia Shavers has continued her excellent career on the glass over the last few games. The Biloxi, Miss. native has pulled down a total of 39 rebounds over the last four games, including a season high of 12 vs. Lamar and Mississippi State. Shavers now has six games of double-digit rebounds for her career which includes a high of 20 at St. Bonaventure during her time with Saint Louis.
 
JACKSON WITH 25 –
 
Redshirt junior Jazmine Jackson put on a show in the win vs. Lamar on November 23, becoming the first ULM player this season to break the 20-point mark. The Jacksonville, Fla. native scored a career-high 25 points including hitting five of six attempts from beyond the arc. Jackson also put in work on the glass as she finished with four rebounds. The 25 points also moved Jackson into the lead for best single-game total by a Warhawk this season.
 
MEMORABLE MILESTONES –
 
Graduate student Asjah Inniss achieved a pair of impressive career benchmarks vs. Grambling State. On a three-point shot late in the second quarter, Inniss would record her 500th career point in what was her 100th career game. Inniss became the fourth player on the Warhawks to reach 500 career points. Katelyn Chomko also reached a career milestone in style as her final three-pointer vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff brought her to an even 100 points for her career. J'Mani Ingram (800) and Nakiyah Mays-Prince (600) each passed important scoring marks for their careers at Mississippi State.
 
UP NEXT – 
 
The Warhawks will shift into Sun Belt Conference play as they will open on the road at Arkansas State (Dec. 17). Tipoff against the Red Wolves is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
