Baseball Preview: Maestri Classic

The Warhawks head to New Orleans to compete in the Maestri Classic, hosted by New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS – The ULM baseball team is headed south as the Warhawks compete in the Maestri Classic, hosted by New Orleans. ULM will first take on Northern Kentucky (1-3) at 11 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 20), then Alabama A&M on Saturday at 11 a.m., wrapping up on Sunday against the host team at 4 p.m. Sunday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and all games will be called on KMLB.com by Javik Blake.

SERIES HISTORY VS. NORTHERN KENTUCKY –

The Warhawks will be facing the Norse for the fourth time in program history, playing for the first time in eight years. Northern Kentucky traveled to Monroe in 2018 for a nonconference series, the Warhawks sweeping the Norse (21-9; 13-10; 9-5). Playing at a neutral site for the first time in the series, ULM will look to extend a 3-0 series record to a fourth win.

SCOUTING THE NORSE –

Northern Kentucky holds a 1-3 record going into the weekend, after going 1-2 in opening weekend at South Carolina. In playing their first seven games on the road, the Norse will not open home play until February 24. Most recently, NKU fell in a 16-11 decision at Eastern Kentucky. The Norse were selected to finish third in the Horizon League this season, after a 31-25 season in 2025. Pitchers Shawn Parnell and Logan Wilson were recognized in the preseason, earning 2026 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watchlist recognition. Landon Springmeyer leads the team, batting .400 with four hits, two doubles and three runs under his belt.

SERIES HISTORY VS. ALABAMA A&M –

The Warhawks will take on the Bulldogs for the fourth time in program history, all three meetings coming in a home series for ULM in 2024. With two run-rule victories, the Warhawks swept Alabama A&M at The Lou (12-1; 18-1 [7]; 11-1 [7]). ULM looks to extend a three-game win streak to four against the Bulldogs.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS –

Alabama A&M opens the season 0-4 under second-year head coach Louis Whitlow, dropping to Texas Southern, Jackson State and Grambling State in the HBCU Power Series during opening weekend. Middle Tennessee also defeated the Bulldogs in a seven-inning 19-2 score in Murfreesboro. The SWAC predicted Alabama A&M's finish to be 10th in the conference after a 10-40 record last season. Tarris Murray has hit the lone homer for the Bulldogs, batting .375 with four RBI and six hits to his name so far.

SERIES HISTORY VS. NEW ORLEANS –

The Warhawks will be facing host New Orleans for the 64th time in the 31-32 series, dating back to 1970. The Privateers are on a three-game win streak against ULM, sweeping the Warhawks in Monroe in 2022. The last time the teams played in New Orleans, however, ULM captured the 7-2 victory to cap off the weekend series. While playing at New Orleans, the Privateers have the slight 19-16 edge as ULM looks to tie up the series again.

SCOUTING THE PRIVATEERS –

New Orleans posts a 1-3 record in its first week, claiming its first win over Southern in a 14-5 score. Sun Belt opponent Georgia State hosted the Privateers for opening weekend, the Panthers defeating UNO in a 10-6, 12-4 and 5-4 score for the home sweep. Dylan Biddick leads the Privateers with a .471 batting average, picking up eight hits–including two doubles and a home run–in the first four games. New Orleans looks to improve in their home opening weekend under first-year head coach Andrew Gipson.

LAST TIME OUT –

ULM Baseball fell in its first midweek of 2026, a late rally by Northwestern State putting them ahead, 13-10. Two runs in the first inning set up the lead for the Warhawks, extending in the third inning as two singles and a sacrifice fly allowed for the score to become 5-0. The Demons responded in the third and fourth innings, two singles and a fielder's choice closing the gap. Another Warhawk single and a home run from Micah Dean set the score at 8-3 in the sixth. A three-run double for NSU's Colin Rains and a single in the seventh made it a one-run game headed into the eighth. Two more scores came in favor for the Warhawks, but it was a six-run inning for the Demons as they found the lead and held on for the win. Six ULM pitchers saw action on the mound, notably starter Seaver Sheets with four strikeouts, but it was Adam Tubbs who claimed the loss, coming in for relief for the eighth inning.

LOOKING AHEAD –

The ULM baseball team will return to The Lou for a midweek against local opponent Grambling State. First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for Tuesday (Feb. 24) at 4 p.m.
