Baseball Preview: South Alabama

The Warhawks travel to Mobile for the second Sun Belt series of 2026.

MONROE, La. - The ULM baseball team (13-9) enters a weekend series in Mobile, Ala., with three games against South Alabama. The Warhawks look to keep their undefeated conference record alive on the road. ULM is also riding a four-game win streak, most recently beating New Orleans on Wednesday.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SOUTH ALABAMA –
Friday's game marks the 64th matchup between the two schools, as the Jaguars hold the all-time series record 45-18. In 2-25, the Warhawks won the first game before dropping the next two games to lose the season-ending series. ULM last won a series against USA in the 2006 season.

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS –
South Alabama currently holds a 14-7 overall record with a 1-2 mark in Sun Belt play. They opened conference play last weekend with a series loss against the Ragin' Cajuns, and most recently defeated Alabama 6-3 at home. They are in ninth place overall in the conference standings, tied with two other teams at 1-2. The Jaguars are led in hitting by Brennon Wright, who is hitting .419, has scored 22 runs and has stolen seven bases. Blake Guerin and Mike Young are also leaders in home runs (5) and RBI (20). Jaxon Shineflew is the leader in ERA with a 1.90 mark in 23.2 innings pitched with 26 strikeouts. Former Warhawk Daniel Gonzalez is also in the weekend rotation, pitching 24 innings and holding a 3.00 ERA with 33 Ks.

LAST TIME OUT –
The Warhawks won a wild 17-12 shootout over New Orleans in a Wednesday night midweek contest. The game featured 14 hits with 13 RBI. Jake Haggard led the team in scoring with four RBI on the night. Marcus Aranda also powered his third home run of the season and his second in back-to-back games in the third inning. ULM had four hitters with multi-hit games and three players with multiple RBI.

HOT STARTS –
The Warhawks host a pair of hitters who have made their mark in the first season at ULM. Davis Mauzy has produced a hit in all 22 games to start the season, having multi-hit games in nine of them. He also recorded his first home run of the season, a three-run blast on Tuesday, Mar. 3 against Southeastern Louisiana. Mauzy is batting .402, has a 1.029 OPS and is the team leader in total hits with 35, ranking him 17th in the country. Danye Wray has also been a hot bat for ULM in 2026, recording a hit in all but three games. His seven home runs lead the team as he possesses a .757 slugging percentage, which ranks him second in the conference. Wray is also batting .371 and is second in RBI with 24 on the year.

FRESHMEN FOR THE FENCES –
ULM freshmen have been able to record home runs and swing for the fences across the opening 21 games. Freshman Sutton Lewis hit two three-run homers throughout opening weekend against Central Arkansas, becoming the only freshman with multiple home runs in opening weekend in the Sun Belt. Wray then followed that up with three home runs in the series against Western Illinois, launching one in each of the three games. He also collected two bombs in the Sun Belt opening series vs. Texas State. The freshman from Smithville, Miss. leads the team in homers with seven on the season. Garrett Wiethorn also joined in on the action, collecting two homers in game three against UT Arlington, his first two of the 2026 season.

NOT A BAD START –
Last weekend's sweep over Texas State produced some historical marks for the team through the first three games. It's the first sweep over a Sun Belt opponent since the 2024 season and the first sweep over the Bobcats since 2001. The Warhawks have also started 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2007 season, where they started 4-0 in Sun Belt play.

ON THE MOUND –
JC Dermody has had a strong start to the 2026 season. In his five starts, he holds a record of 4-0 and possesses an ERA of 4.39, most recently pitching all seven innings in the win vs. Texas State. Dermody arrives in Monroe after a season at Wichita State and is tied for first among pitchers in the league with four wins so far this season. Adam Brodnax has also had a good start to 2026, leading the team with a 2.95 ERA across 21.1 innings pitched. The freshman from Deville, La. is also the team leader in strikeouts with 26 on the season.
