Baseball Preview: Arkansas State

The Warhawks host their third conference series of the season.

MONROE, La. - The ULM baseball team (20-17) returns home to Lou St. Amant Field for a weekend series vs. Arkansas State. Game one will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, while games two and three will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

SERIES HISTORY VS. ARKANSAS STATE –
Friday's game marks the 90th matchup in series history as the Red Wolves control the all-time record with a 46-43 mark. Arkansas State won the series in Jonesboro last year, winning games one and three while dropping game two. The Warhawks have won the past seven games in Monroe dating back to 2018, which includes two series sweeps in 2024 and 2022. ULM has also taken 10 of the past 14 games overall in the series.

SCOUTING THE RED WOLVES –
Arkansas State holds an overall record of 22-14 with a Sun Belt mark of 7-8. As of Apr. 15, it stands at eighth in the conference. The Red Wolves are winners of two straight heading into Friday, which includes a 6-3 win over No. 11 Coastal Carolina at home. They are led in hitting by Derek Martinez, who possesses a .344 batting average and has double-digit home runs with ten on the season. He also has a slugging percentage of .711 and has an OPS of 1.160. Ashton Quiller leads the team in total hits with 47 and has 11 stolen bases. Lane Walton has a team-leading 11 home runs and 37 RBI in 2026. On the mound, Dylan Farley and Tyler Welmer both have produced sub three ERAs with 2.72 for the former and 2.89 for the latter.

LAST TIME OUT –
The Warhawks traveled to Boone, N.C. to face App State in a weekend series, losing games one and three while winning game two. Marcus Aranda and Garrett Wiethorn supplied two home runs each in the first two games of the series. The Warhawks tied the game in the sixth inning of game one, but eight unanswered runs for the Mountaineers put the match out of reach. After trailing 8-4 going into the sixth, the Warhawks plated six runs to take control and rode the momentum to a 14-9 win. Pitching struggles prevented another comeback attempt in game three, as a six-run inning in the bottom of the seventh gave App State the series win. The Warhawks have now allowed nine or more runs in six straight Sun Belt games.

HOT BATS –
The Warhawks host a group of hitters who have made their mark in the first season at ULM. Davis Mauzy has recorded a hit in 33 of 37 games in the season, having multi-hit games in 13 of them. He also recorded a home run in Lafayette, a three-run blast in game one against the Ragin' Cajuns. Mauzy is batting a team leading .362 average and has 54 total hits. Danye Wray has also been a hot bat for ULM in 2026, recording a hit in all but eight games played. He has eight home runs on the year and is batting .305 with 29 RBI.

ARANDA ASSAULT -
Marcus Aranda has emerged as the top home run threat on the team and one of the top power hitters in the conference. He has homered in six of the past eight games and has a team-leading ten long balls on the year. He is the second Warhawks since 2022 to record double-digit home runs in a season with five Sun Belt series left to play. He is also second on the team in RBI with 39 total.

FRESHMEN FOR THE FENCES –
ULM freshmen have been able to record home runs and swing for the fences across the opening 33 games. Freshman Sutton Lewis hit two three-run homers throughout opening weekend against Central Arkansas, becoming the only freshman with multiple home runs in opening weekend in the Sun Belt. Wray then followed that up with three home runs in the series against Western Illinois, launching one in each of the three games. He also collected two bombs in the Sun Belt opening series vs. Texas State. The freshman from Smithville, Miss. leads the team in homers with eight on the season. Garrett Wiethorn also joined in on the action, collecting two homers in game three against UT Arlington, his first two of the 2026 season.

NOT A BAD START –
The team's sweep over Texas State produced some historical marks for the team through the first three games. It's the first sweep over a Sun Belt opponent since the 2024 season and the first sweep over the Bobcats since 2001. The Warhawks have also started 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2007 season, where they started 4-0 in Sun Belt play. The team is currently tied for second in the conference standing with a 7-5 conference record.

EXTRA INNING WARFARE -
ULM and Georgia State started the series last weekend with two extra inning thrillers. The Panthers won game one at the top of the 13th, as a single and a double plated three runs, giving them the 10-7 win. The Warhawks returned the favor in game two, ending a 9-9 deadlock with a Wiethorn double into right field which scored Jackson Landry. Both games marked the first pair of extra-inning games played for ULM in 2026.
