Monroe, La. - The ULM baseball team wrapped up a victory in a game that was suspended on Saturday night, winning 10-5 over McNeese State, before dropping the series finale to the Cowboys 10-2 on Sunday at Warhawk Field.
ULM 10, McNeese 5
Saturday night's game featured several delays. The start of the game was delayed a half hour to allow the teams time to warm up after rain fell between 4:15 and 5:30 in Monroe. The game also had a short rain delay before the start of the bottom of the second, a fog delay before the start of the bottom of the seventh, and a second fog delay in the bottom of the seventh before the game was finally suspended to Sunday.
McNeese scored a single run in each of the first two innings, but ULM matched it in the bottom of the first with
Ryan Humeniuk scoring on
Andrew Beesley's RBI groundout. The Warhawks answered again in the second when
Braedon Barrett hit a solo homerun to right field to tie the game, and took the lead for good on Trent Tinglestad's RBI single to plate
Carson Klepzig for the 3-2 advantage.
The Warhawks added to the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning when
Nathan Miranda's RBI groundout scored Beesley and
Masen Prososki scored on a wild pitch to go up 5-2.
McNeese pulled within two at 5-3 in the sixth when Ryan Borque scored on a steal and an error.
The fog rolled in to delay the start of the seventh inning, but soon lifted to allow play to continue for a few minutes. Beesley and
Colin Gordon connected for singles, and Barrett was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Miranda and
Logan Wurm drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to drive home a pair of runs t to push the lead to 7-3. After Humeniuk struck out, Tingelstad walked to bring home Barrett to lead 8-3. That's when the umpires elected to halt the game for another fog delay, and ultimately suspended the contest until Sunday.
When play resumed Sunday afternoon,
Chad Bell drew a walk to force home Miranda, and Beesley singled to bring home Wurm for the 10-3 lead. McNeese added two runs in the ninth inning on a home run by Carson Maxwell for the final margin.
Beesley led the Warhawks with a 4-for-5 game at the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Tingelstad also had two hits with a double and two RBIs.
Kolton Childress (1-0) picked up his first win of the year, tossing two scoreless innings of relief on Saturday night, giving up two hits while striking out three Cowboys.
McNeese 10, ULM 2
In the regularly scheduled game for Sunday, McNeese took control in the first inning and never let up. The first three hitters of the game collected hits off starting pitcher
Kayleb Sanderson, with Shane Selman picking up two RBIs and Maxwell collecting an RBI on a groundout, scoring Selman for a 3-0 lead.
After the Cowboys added a run in the third inning, ULM tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, with Barrett's sacrifice fly scoring Wurm in the fourth and Wurm's RBI single scoring Bell in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2.
However, Maxwell hit a solo homer to left in the seventh, and the Cowboys broke the game open with a five-run top of the eighth to win 10-2.
Humeniuk had two hits, including a double, to pace the Warhawk offense. ULM was limited to five hits in the loss.
Sanderson (2-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits with two walks in two-and-a-third innings.
