Baseball Preview: Southeastern Louisiana

The Warhawks look to continue their home success with a two-game midweek series against Southeastern Louisiana.

MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team (8-5) is continuing a seven-game home stretch with a midweek two-game series against Southeastern Louisiana (4-7). The Warhawks look to continue after success in a six-game win streak and a series sweep over Western Illinois.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SOUTHEASTERN –

In a history dating back to 1953 and spanning 128 games, the Warhawks hold the 70-58 edge over the Lions, currently on a two-game win streak from 2020. Not having played each other in six years, ULM looks to continue the win streak, along with the four-game streak when playing in Monroe. In the last meeting, the Warhawks captured their largest margin of victory over SLU, defeating them 23-5.

SCOUTING THE LIONS –

Southeastern sits at 4-7 on the season, claiming wins over SIUE and most recently, a series win over Northwestern State to open conference play 2-1. The Lions have fallen to two Sun Belt opponents this season in Southern Miss and South Alabama. The defending Southland Conference regular season champions, the Lions return all-conference hitters Dane Watts and Giovanni Licciardi. Ragin' Cajuns transfer Ben Robichaux leads the team with a .323 batting average and nine RBI, Tennessee transfer Alex Perry scoring nine runs and claiming nine RBI. Brady St. Pierre leads the pitching room with 18 strikeouts, Kaleb Howell posting a 1.17 ERA across 12 innings.

LAST TIME OUT –

The Warhawks had a strong 3-0 weekend, scoring in double figures across all three games with 12-5, 11-4 and 11-7 wins. Dayne Wray played hero with three home runs–one in each game–while Jackson Landry and Jake Haggard also posted homers. An early lead of 8-1 through four innings in the first game set up the victory through nine. A closer contest in the second game brought the grit, the Leathernecks scoring first and hanging on with a 4-4 tie after six innings. Seven runs scored in the seventh and eighth innings for the Warhawks secured the 11-4 win. WIU scored first again on Sunday, getting to the 4-2 lead after three innings. A seven-run fifth inning for ULM set the team apart as they cruised to an 11-7 win for the sweep. Pitchers Adam Brodnax (5.0 IP, 6 K, 1 ER), Canaan Clayton (2.1 IP, 4 K, 0 ER) and Adam Tubbs (2.1 IP, 1 K, 0 ER) all claimed wins on the weekend, Holden Hess picking up the save on Saturday.

FAMILIAR COMPETITION –

The midweek series against Southeastern marks head coach Ford Pemberton's first time competing against one of his former teams as a head coach. Pemberton spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons at SLU as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator under former head coach Matt Riser. At SLU, Pemberton assembled JBB's No. 2 ranked JUCO recruiting class in the nation for 2023. In 2022, Pemberton helped the offense achieve top-10 school marks in doubles, triples and home runs. The team's 70 home runs led the Southland Conference and ranked fourth in program history. Four Lions slugged double-digit home runs, and the team topped 100 doubles for the first time since 2010. Pemberton's work with the defense helped SLU post a program-best .978 fielding percentage in 2022.

FRESHMEN FOR THE FENCES –

ULM freshmen have been able to record home runs and swing for the fences across the opening 13 games. Freshman Sutton Lewis hit two three-run homers throughout opening weekend against Central Arkansas, becoming the only freshman with multiple home runs in opening weekend in the Sun Belt. Dayne Wray then followed that up with three home runs in the series against Western Illinois, launching one in each of the three games.

HOMETOWN HEROES –

The 2026 ULM baseball roster features eight players who played high school baseball inside Ouachita (wah-shuh-tah) Parish. The roster includes three players from Sterlington High School in freshman infielder Travis Adams, redshirt senior pitcher Seaver Sheets and redshirt senior pitcher Adam Tubbs; one player from Ouachita Christian in sophomore catcher Zach White; one player from West Monroe High School in freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Roark; and three players from Neville High School in freshman right-handed pitcher Samuel Marsh, junior catcher Drew Jarrell and freshman infielder Sutton Lewis.

LOOKING AHEAD –

The ULM baseball team will hit the road after a seven-game stretch at home. The Warhawks will travel to face UT Arlington for a weekend series beginning on Friday (March 6) at 6 p.m.
