Softball Series Preview: Ragin' Cajuns

The Warhawks look to bounce back and clinch another Sun Belt series against a local foe.

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (19-17, 3-3 SBC) remains at the ULM Softball Complex to continue an eight-game homestand. The Warhawks will host the Ragin' Cajuns (20-13, 3-3 SBC) in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Streaming for the games will be on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on ULMWarhawks.com/Stats.

SERIES HISTORY VS. ULL –

The Warhawks will take on the Cajuns for the 155th, 156th and 157th meetings in series history, dating back to the inaugural 1980 season. With the 123-31 advantage, ULL looks to extend on a 47-14 lead when playing in Monroe. The last win ULM captured over the Cajuns at home was in 2007, a 1-0 victory. The last time the series was clinched for the Warhawks over ULL was 2001, last occurring in Monroe in 1997. Last season, ULM fell in the first two games of the series in Lafayette (5-3 [8], 9-3) before defeating the Cajuns for the first time since 2021 in game three, 10-5.

SCOUTING THE CAJUNS –

The Cajuns have recorded a 20-13 record so far this season, an even 3-3 in conference play. ULL opened the season with nonconference defeats over Tulsa, Jacksonville State, North Texas, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. After opening Sun Belt play with a 1-2 weekend against Southern Miss, the Cajuns were able to clinch the series against reigning league champions Texas State with a 2-1 weekend. Most recently, ULL defeated McNeese in a 5-2 score in Lafayette. Leading the league in sacrifice bunts (31), the Cajuns look to expand on conference success. Brooke Otto leads the team with 32 RBI and 23 runs, also logging a Sun Belt-leading 12 doubles. Pitcher Bethaney Noble (62.1 IP) is second in the league with a 2.02 ERA, striking out 33 batters.

LAST TIME OUT –

In a home midweek, the Warhawks fell in a 3-0 contest to Southeastern Louisiana. A lead-off solo shot by Shelby Morris set the tone in the first inning, two more runs scoring in the second. After that, however, the ULM defense held the Lions without a score through five innings. While getting runners on base, the Warhawks were unable to plate runners and chip at the deficit. Olivia Faggard logged the lone multi-hit game of the night with two, also recording 14 putouts at first base. Dakota Lake (1.1 IP) is credited with the loss, while Skylar Waggoner (5.2 IP) struck out a batter and refused a walk to prevent scores.

WARHAWK HOMESTAND –

ULM remains in Monroe to continue an eight-game homestand, last seeing that many consecutive games in 2024, when the Warhawks also hosted eight-straight games. The longest homestand for the Warhawks was a 12-game stretch, occurring four times in program history: 2007, 1998, 1992 and 1985.

CAREER FIRSTS –

Multiple Warhawks have collected career firsts–aside from the eight freshman logging their first collegiate outings. Olivia Faggard has recorded three doubles this season, her first hit coming against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on February 22. Hollie Thomas leads the team with five home runs this season, her first career homer coming on February 10 against Stephen F. Austin. Kennan Nunamaker's first career hit was a double to walk off a win in six innings against Lamar (Feb. 21). Freshman pitchers Abagail Creighton and Tessa Ivy each logged their first strikeouts this season, Creighton on February 22 and Ivy on February 15.

Ks ALL DAY –

Four ULM pitchers have picked up career highs in strikeouts this season, two breaking double digits in Ks. First, senior Maddie Nichols struck out 11 batters in five innings of action. Then, left-handed pitcher Skylar Waggoner followed up with 13 Ks in a complete-game one-hitter shutout. Dakota Lake then posted a complete game shutout of her own against Grambling State, striking out a career-high nine batters in the 2-0 victory. Ashanti McDade is the most recent to break her career high, with five strikeouts in a 2-1 win over South Alabama.

TWICE AS NICE –

Twins Meagan Brown and Morgan Brown boast similar numbers and continue to find success on the field together. Both sisters collected three hits and three RBIs when batting back-to-back against Grambling (March 4), hitting a collective .441 when hitting consecutively in the lineup. They are one of 15 sets of twins playing on the same NCAA softball team. Last season, the girls hit back-to-back home runs on two separate occasions. Both sisters were also named to the All-Sun Belt First Team and Preseason All-Sun Belt team.

LOOKING AHEAD –

The homestand continues for the Warhawks, as ULM hosts Alcorn State in a midweek to conclude the eight-game streak in Monroe. First pitch on Tuesday against the Braves is slated for 6 p.m.
