MONROE, La. – Leading their teams to double-figure victories,
Amos Olatayo from men's basketball and
Sharnice Brooks from women's basketball earned Warhawk Male and Female of the Week awards, respectively.
Olatayo poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Warhawks to a 34 point win over Samford, 86-52. The senior went 10-for-13 from the field with a pair of threes and also grabbed four rebounds. He was one of four ULM student-athletes to score in double-figures in the team's home opener in the 43rd season at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Houston, Texas native has scored in double-figures in 10 consecutive games dating back to last season. It was his 10th career 20+ scoring game. He led the team in scoring last season with 17 points per game in conference play and is currently averaging 16.5 points after two contests.
It was the largest margin of victory for ULM since a 97-43 win over Union College (Ky.) on Jan. 3, 2009. It was ULM's most lop-sided score over a Division I program since Feb. 3, 2000 when it defeated Lamar 95-58.
Brooks continued her early-season breakout in even stronger style this week in ULM's 87-77 victory over Southland foe Southeastern Louisiana. The junior, making just her second career start, tallied a career-high 22 points and matched her career-high mark with nine rebounds. Brooks fell one rebound shy of a double-double for the second straight game after recording 16 and nine against Louisiana College last week.
Both the field goals made and attempted represented new career highs as well, topping her previous marks of seven and 10, respectively. The free throw marks were also new bests for Brooks: her previous highs were four made and six attempted. Finally, the 26 minutes of action were a career-high as well, topping the 23 that she had against Middle Tennessee in the Sun Belt quarterfinals last season.
For the season, Brooks is averaging 15.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and is shooting an astounding .704 (19-of-27) from the field. She also has four blocks, an assist and a steal to go along with those numbers.
The men will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Northwestern State for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The women will head to Central Arkansas on Saturday at noon.
