MONROE, La. – With tournament MVP and all-conference first-team honors respectively,
Vanessa Garcia from the ULM softball program earned Warhawk Female of the Week and
Isaac Grieder from track & field was named Warhawk Male of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Garcia, from Albuquerque, N.M., earned Warhawk Classic Tournament MVP after leading the Warhawks to a 5-1 weekend. Garcia hit .400 (6-for-15) at the plate with 10 RBI and three homers. She also walked twice and appeared in the field at both third and second bases.
The freshman's first two home runs were three-run blasts while her solo shot on Sunday allowed the Warhawks to "walk-off" 8-0 over Southern in the bottom of the fifth. Garcia currently leads the team in batting average among regular starters. She is also tied with
Faith Bohack for a team-high 16 RBI.
Garcia and the Warhawks will be back at it on Friday when they play the first of five games over the weekend at the Texas Tournament. ULM will face Texas Southern, Texas and Southern Miss.
At the 2014 Sun Belt Conference indoor track & field championships,
Isaac Grieder won the seven-event heptathlon and earned All-Conference First-Team honors.
Grieder set a school record with 5310 points. His first-place point total was more than 200 points greater than the second-place finisher. It also shattered the previous school record of 5,187 set in 2009 by Isaac Combs.
The Garland, Texas native set personal-records in five of the seven events. He posted times of 7.05 and 8.57 in the 60m and 60m hurdles, respectively. Grieder won the shot put with a 13.26m toss and also set personal-records in the long jump (6.65m) and the high jump (1.88m).
