MONROE, La. – Coming off big weeks,
Amos Olatayo from men's basketball and
Ashleigh Simmons from women's basketball earned Warhawk Male and Female of the Week awards, respectively.
The award will revert to Warhawk of the Month for Dec., 2013 and will resume as a weekly honor in Jan., 2014.
It's the second consecutive Warhawk of the Week accolade for Olatayo. The Houston, Texas product posted a game-high 30 points to lead the Warhawks to come-from-behind victory over Northwestern State in overtime.
Olatayo went 11-for-13 from the field with a pair of threes to match his career-high and also grabbed nine rebounds. The Warhawks trailed by 18 with 15:04 remaining in the second half before mounting a comeback. Olatayo scored six of ULM's 10 points in overtime, including the go-ahead bucket with 34 seconds left.
The senior has scored in double-figures in 11 consecutive games dating back to last season. It was his 11th career 20+ scoring game and his second in a row. He was one of four ULM student-athletes to score in double-figures against NSU. Olatayo last scored 30 points on Feb. 2, 2013 at FIU.
Simmons posted ULM's first double-double of the season and the 11th of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds at Central Arkansas this past Saturday.
The Hawkins, Texas native played a season-high 30 minutes against the Sugar Bears and went 5-of-10 from the field; the senior has now shot 50 percent or better from the field in each of the first four games this season.
In addition to her double-double, Simmons also had two assists, two blocks and two steals. She and the Warhawks will be back in action tonight when they take on Ole Miss at 5:30 p.m. on the road.
