Championship Performances Earn Grieder, Coyne Warhawk of the Week Honors

Track & Field

MONROE, La. – Huge performances at Sun Belt Championships last week earned Isaac Grieder from track & field Warhawk Male of the Week and Melanie Coyne from softball Warhawk Female of the Week, announced Tuesday.

Grieder, the SBC champion in the decathlon, posted 7,301 points to break Falk Schade's ULM school-record of 7,218 points set in 1989. Grieder also broke Ethan Turpen's (Arkansas State) SBC Championships record of 7,292 set last season.

Additionally, the senior set a new personal-record, topping his previous best of 7,034 set earlier this season in the Texas Relays. He set career-bests in four of the 10 events in the competition.

The Garland, Texas native was in action on all three days. After taking gold in the decathlon in the first two days, he came back to compete in the pole vault on Sunday where he finished fourth and picked up five more points for the Warhawks.

Grieder was named to the All-Conference First-Team for his accomplishments. He was one of six Warhawks to win first-place over the weekend, the most since 1995.

It marked the fifth career Warhawk of the Week award for Grieder and second this season.

With outstanding pitching throughout the SBC Tournament, Coyne led the Warhawks to back-to-back victories on elimination Wednesday and secured a fourth-place finish. The sophomore started all four tournament games for the Warhawks with two complete-game outings and one complete-game shutout.

Coyne pitched a total of 20.2 innings to garner a 2.37 ERA at the SBC Tournament. She allowed only 13 hits and seven earned runs in her four appearances in the tournament. She struck out four batters, and became a headache for opponents as they averaged just .173 against her.

In the opening round, Coyne cruised to a 6-1 victory over UT Arlington without allowing a run until the seventh inning. She allowed just four hits and one run.

Coyne's best tournament outing came against third-seeded and tournament host Texas State. The sophomore dealt a seven inning shutout, allowing two hits, six walks and two strikeouts.

The Huntington Beach, Calif., native earned a spot on the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament team for her tremendous play on the week.
