MONROE, La. – Tylor Ongwae from the ULM men's basketball team and Sharnice Brooks from the women's basketball team were named Warhawk Male and Female of the Month winners, respectively.
Ongwae helped lead the Warhawks to their first non-conference winning record in seven years. In the process, he picked up both a Sun Belt Conference and Co-Louisiana Player of the Week award.
The Eldoret, Kenya native has played a big role in keeping the Warhawks undefeated at home this season. He posted back-to-back 25-point games in victories over Central Baptist and LSU-Alexandria at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The senior also notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds at home in a victory over Northwestern State. He also dished out nine assists in the game. Ongwae neared a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds against Louisiana College on nine made field goals.
On the season, Ongwae leads the team with 14.2 points per game and also grabs 6.2 rebounds per outing. He ranks second in the conference in free throw percentage with a .851 (40-47) mark.
It marked the seventh career Warhawk of the Month/Week award for Ongwae and the second this season.
Brooks, who leads the team with an average of 13.2 points per game overall, is fourth in league play in scoring with 16.5 points per game. She is shooting 54.6 percent from the field on the season.
Prior to conference play, the senior dropped a season-high 20 points to help the Warhawks snatch a thrilling 66-63 victory over McNeese State. It was one of five double-figure contests for Brooks, who also collected 19 points in the conference-opener at Georgia State.
The Mer Rouge, La., native also leads the team in rebounds with an average of 6.4 rebounds per game, a feat that ranks 11th in theSBC. This season, Brooks matched a career-high in rebounds as she grabbed nine against Wichita State. Brooks currently ranks 16th in conference games with 6.0 rebounds per game.
In addition to points and rebounds, Brooks is tied for first on the team with 17 blocked shots on the season, or 1.5 blocks per game. Brooks has matched her career-high of four blocks twice this season (William Carey and LSU-Alexandria). The 1.5 blocks places the senior third in the Sun Belt in blocked shots.
ULM will be back in action this weekend with games against UT Arlington on Thursday and Texas State on Saturday. The women tip at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with the men following 30 minutes after each game.
Warhawk of the Month will again be distributed for the month of January and then revert back to a weekly award in February.
