MONROE, La. – Corey Wesley from the ULM track & field program and Samantha Hamby from the softball team capped April on a high-note and earned Warhawk Male and Female of the Week honors, respectively, announced Tuesday.
Wesley, from Plano, Texas, registered a personal-record score of 7.67m in the long jump on Saturday in Natchitoches, La., at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational. He finished as the top collegiate competitor and second overall.
The sophomore's leap ranks eighth on the NCAA Division I East Qualifying list and is also top-20 in the nation. Wesley's new record score sits as the second best jump in the Sun Belt Conference this season.
Wesley and the Warhawks will have their final tune-up on Saturday before the Sun Belt Conference Championships as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for the Black and Gold Invite.
Hamby picked up a pair of wins on the week and posted a 1.82 ERA. On her Senior Day, she tossed an eight-inning complete-game shutout to guide the Warhawks to a 1-0 victory over Georgia State on Sunday.
A hometown product of Monroe, La., Hamby started the week with a six-strikeout performance against Southeastern Louisiana. She fired a complete-game and picked up the win as she didn't allow an earned run. On the week, the right-hander tallied 13 strikeouts.
Hamby and the Warhawks will close out the regular season this weekend when they travel to UL-Lafayette for a three-game series.
