Simoneaux, Araya & Markova Take Warhawk of the Week Nods

Beach Volleyball

MONROE, La. – A walk-off homer from ULM baseball's Chet Simoneaux and a national Elite Eight appearance from the sand volleyball team of Marcela Araya and Zuzana Markova earned them Warhawk Male and Female of the Week honors, respectively, announced Tuesday.

Simoneaux joined the bomb squad on Sunday afternoon as his solo homer down the left field line gave the Warhawks a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Hilltoppers of WKU. Simoneaux's fifth homer of the season helped ULM pick up a much needed win and put the squad in a tie for seventh place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with just six league games remaining.

The senior from Brusly, La., finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. He was one of three Warhawks (Dalton Herrington, Justin Stawychny) to hit a homer in the come-from-behind win over the Hilltoppers.

Simoneaux tallied one hit (double), one RBI and one run in the series opener against WKU. His double down the left field line allowed Herrington to score and even the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Simoneaux was able to score and give ULM a 3-2 lead on a RBI single by Josh Faciane.

Araya and Markova finished their historic season over the weekend at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships, held in Gulf Shores, Ala. The pair won their pool with a 3-1 record, falling only to Long Beach State on Saturday.

The Warhawk tandem grabbed the seventh seed in the Pairs Championship and ousted an eighth-seeded USC pair to advance to the quarterfinals. "Mar-Z"'s run finished in the quarterfinals, where they fell to Florida State's Aurora Davis and Jace Pardon. Davis and Pardon went on to finish second in the Pairs Championship.

Markova and Araya finish the season with a 27-10 record. Both were named to the AVCA All-American Sand Volleyball squad. Markova was also named the AVSR Global Sand Player of the Week for the second time this season.

It marked the second Warhawk of the Week honors for both Simoneaux and the sand volleyball duo.
